Pickle Ball and Dog Park Plan Review E X E C U T I V E S U M M A R Y Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting: February 27, 2023 AGENDA ITEM: Dog Park and Pickle Ball Plan Review AGENDA SECTION: New Business PREPARED BY: Dan Schultz, Parks & Recreation Director AGENDA NO. 7 a. ATTACHMENTS: Location Map and Concept Plans APPROVED BY: dls RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion for the Parks and Recreation Commission support the option ____ for the design of the pickle ball complex and off leash dog park. ISSUE As part of the Amber Fields development, property on the east side of Akron Avenue and south of the UMore ball fields is being dedicated to the City as parkland. Two amenities that we do not have in our City Park system is a large off leash dog park or permanent pickleball courts. Both amenities have proven to be very popular in other local communities and staff feels that the land identified on the location map would be a great location for placing the off-leash dog park and pickleball courts. The advantage to locating these two facilities away from residential developments are related to noise from that can come from the dog park and the sounds that come from those playing pickleball. A neighboring community had to move a pickleball complex away from in adjacent neighborhood due to the several complaints they received about the noise of people playing pickleball. Staff has been working with design staff at Bolton and Menk to create concept plans for the dog park and pickleball complex. We have looked at three different access points to enter the property from Akron Avenue. Based on future road expansion, access spacing and length of driveway into the park, staff feels that it is most advantageous to enter the property from the north. Attached are two concept plans that show a pickleball complex, an off leash dog park, regional trail and parking facilities to be reviewed by the Commission. BACKGROUND The Amber Fields development is located on a portion of the UMore property south of County Road 42 and west of Akron Avenue with a small area east of Akron Avenue. The entire site is 435.55 acres and they are proposing to build approximately 1,959 units of varying types across the property. The development has started and much of the site is graded, several roads are in and a handful of homes are being built. SUMMARY Staff would like to discuss the two concept plans with the Commission and have the Commission make a recommendation to support one of the concept plans. Location Map
